Invite your crowd to view the recorded lesson, and learn some small steps you can use right away.\u00a0Get all the details at <a href=\"http:\/\/saveyour.town\/retail\/\">The Future of Retail at SaveYour.Town<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How did we get here?<\/h2>\n<p>There are a lot of news stories that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/business\/wp\/2017\/05\/12\/breaking-down-this-weeks-signs-of-retails-big-reckoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">point to eCommerce as the cause of big retail\u2019s decline<\/a>\u00a0and also as its replacement.\u00a0Today, you can reorder all your regular items like paper towels or laundry soap just by telling your voice-controlled assistant to handle it. Even more automated, you can set up all regular items on recurring shipments that you don\u2019t even think about. How long before your refrigerator and cupboards will notice you\u2019re low on something and just reorder it? That means no chance for a big box store to capture an impulse purchase when you make a quick run to the store for those items.<\/p>\n<p>Going by the stories you hear and how you shop, you&#8217;d think like 75% of sales are online sales. They aren&#8217;t. It&#8217;s 9% as of Q3 2017. (Check the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ycharts.com\/indicators\/ecommerce_sales_as_percent_retail_sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">historical charts here<\/a>)\u00a0While online sales are increasing quickly, this can\u2019t be the only cause for big retail\u2019s decline or the only\u00a0replacement. We\u2019re also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4072914-traditional-retail-fall-just-begun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">purchasing less<\/a>\u00a0for a variety of societal and cultural reasons and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2017-retail-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">big boxes have a serious debt problem<\/a>. But that still leaves a lot of purchases being made that are not at big boxes and not online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are the rest of sales going? Small retailers.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While all boring retail purchases get automated, interesting retail purchases become small, sustainable, curated, handcrafted, local and integrated with technology. Items we care about, are interested in, and want to enjoy shopping for, will come from small local retailers.<\/p>\n<p>Customers are already shifting their spending to smaller retailers. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mastercardadvisors.com\/solutions\/product_list\/spendingPulse\/#media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MasterCard SpendingPulse for Small Business<\/a>\u00a0has reported on the \u201cgeneral consumer trend to shop small\u201d for the past\u00a0<em>four years.<\/em>\u00a0Bloomberg finally picked it up in November with the memorable headline,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-11-22\/mom-and-pop-shops-are-threatening-the-mall-this-holiday-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mom and Pop Shops Are Threatening the Mall This Holiday Season<\/a>. <em>(Sorry, not sorry!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Big retailers are responding by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/will-the-rapidly-shrinking-store-save-retail\/2017\/12\/22\/857d96cc-db7f-11e7-b1a8-62589434a581_story.html?nid&amp;utm_term=.3430e3b6eb4f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">downsizing their giant stores<\/a>, but I think this misses the point of what customers really want: local small retailers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can local stores in small towns do today to capitalize on retail\u2019s big split?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Offer items that can\u2019t be bought online. Locally-produced items, personalization and special services give you an advantage.<\/li>\n<li>Be your best small retail self. Know your product better than anyone. Give outstanding service. Be open later hours when customers are available.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on experience, enjoyment and meaning. Customers want to know their purchases matter.<\/li>\n<li>Use online retail\u2019s own tools against them. Try automatic orders, delivery, and better recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>Add more technology to be more human. Use tablets to improve your service.
